Faten Babaa

Faten was born in 1977 in Libya. She was raised up in Rome, Italy and studied Business Administration at John Cabot University there. In 2004, she returned to Libya to re-discover her origins and eventually through travelling around the country developed a keen interest in photography.

Self-taught as an artist, her camera captures the subtle, the unusual and the surreal images she encounters during her travels across Libya and other countries too. Her subjects reflect the daily life for different people, including their afflictions, source of happiness and worries. Themes such as the environmental, humanitarian and political issues also prevail.

Photography is Faten's passion and her powerful images have already been exhibited in Rome, Tripoli and Tunis. In 2009, she also won a Best Photograph Award for participating in a photographic competition held in Tunis on the fragile social and economic condition of women in the Arab world.

During the February 17th Revolution, Faten was active in humanitarian relief efforts and involved with the charity sector. She has also worked with various NGOs, including the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA).

Currently, she is involved with the reconciliation process in Libya.
