Hadia Gana

Hadia Gana was born in Libya in 1973 to a French mother and Libyan father. She studied Ceramics and Glass Making at the University of Tripoli and then gained a Masters in Ceramics from the University of Wales, Cardiff in 2005.

Since then she has been an Art teacher at various levels ranging from primary school to university in Libya. In 2010, she was also awarded an Arts Residency at the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam. As well as sculpture and installation artwork, she designs furniture and pottery and took part in the redesign of the Libyan Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Exposition.

During the February 2011 Revolution, Gana actively blogged under the heading '40 Years of running on the same spot: A Libyan Diary'; and, in contemplating that time, she created the unusual installation piece called 'Zarda' that was received with great acclaim during Noon Arts' first exhibition 'The Libyan' at the Arab British Centre in London in 2012.

'Zarda' - which in the local Arabic dialect means 'picnic' - depicted the customary rug on the ground to sit on, whilst being surrounded by leftover litter made up of plastic bottles, cans and rubbish bags. When one looked closer at the ensemble, one deciphered the writings of Libya's Revolutionary slogans and made out images of the martyrs, the missing and a list of their names. The piece reflected on the post-Revolutionary state of the country and posed serious questions as to the future.

Gana has also been busy with opening 'The Ali Gana Centre for Arts and Crafts' in Libya that provides a space and studios for craftsmen and artists to work, teach and discuss freely as well as the 'The Ali Gana Museum' in memory of her late father. In 2014 Hadia took residency with the Ashkal Alwan programme in Beirut.

Hadia has exhibited in Libya, Malta, France, Holland and UK.
